Review of Hockey NS 2025-26 Coaching Requirements

IMPORTANT CHANGES: for Season 25-26
On June 25, 2025, Hockey Canada launched The Shift Forward: Evolving Hockey Culture, a new learning and development program that will be the new home for national education and training courses.
In an effort to support a successful transition to The Shift Forward, Hockey Canada will continue to recognize existing training (Speak out and Respect in Support for Activity Leaders) as an equivalent as part of a multi-year phase before all participants engaging with hockey will be required to participate in the national education and training courses. All previous experienced volunteers have 2 years to obtain this course by the 27-28 season.

Previous changes from 2025
HOCKEY CANADA LEARNING LAB LAUNCHED: Hockey Canada has launched the brand-new Hockey Canada Learning Lab that will replace Hockey University this season. The new Hockey Canada Learning Lab will include modernized course content and accessibility features.
This change will make things easier for our volunteer coaches as many of our coach clinics will move exclusively online, including the new Coach 1 and Coach 2 clinics.
COACH 1 AND COACH 2 CLINICS NOW OFFERED: This season, the clinic formerly known as Intro to Coach, as well as HU Online 1/2 (which was a prerequisite for Intro to Coach), have been replaced by Coach 1 and Coach 2 but still will be honored to use in all levels of hockey. Coach Development 1 course will no longer be required .
New Coaching Requirements
U7/U9 require Coach 1 (ex Intro to Coach Program can still be used to equal Coach 1)
U11/13/15/18/21 All Divisions require Coach 2 (Coach Development 1 can still be used to equal Coach 2)
There will no longer be any Team Safety reps required

Criminal Record Checks
Very important to start this right away to avoid not having it complete
(https://www.backcheck.net/hockeynovascotia/) for your Criminal Record Check. Select "Chebucto MHA" from the drop-down list. It is also important to watch for a reply from Halifax Regional Police containing your Serial Number. Your Serial Number must be copied and pasted into your MyBackCheck account to share your Criminal Record Check results with Chebucto Minor Hockey.
If for any reason a volunteer's Criminal Record Check requires fingerprinting, it can take quite a long time to process. Backlogs with the system can also occur near the deadline. Please do not delay starting this step.
  • If you don't receive an email from Halifax Regional Police, you can call them at 902-490-1329.
